A company network is the collection of hardware, cabling, wireless equipment and configuration that lets your computers, servers, printers and phones communicate with each other and with the internet. It is infrastructure in the truest sense: invisible when it works, and the only thing anyone talks about when it does not.

The parts that make it up

• The connection. The circuit from your provider and the modem that terminates it.
• The firewall or router. The gatekeeper between your business and the internet, deciding what traffic is allowed in and out.
• Switches. The equipment wired devices plug into, moving traffic between them.
• Access points. Wireless coverage for laptops, phones and tablets.
• Servers and storage. Where shared files, applications and user accounts live, whether on site or in the cloud.
• Endpoints. The workstations, printers and devices your staff use.

Why the design matters

Two businesses can own identical hardware and have completely different experiences of it. Segmentation determines whether a guest device can reach your accounting server. Redundancy determines whether a single failure stops the office. Capacity determines whether the network still performs when everyone is in on Monday morning.

Good design also makes problems findable. A documented network with a sensible structure can be diagnosed in minutes. One that grew organically over ten years, with undocumented changes and equipment nobody can account for, takes days.

Signs yours needs attention

Wireless that drops in parts of the building, slowdowns at predictable times of day, equipment nobody can identify, no record of what is connected, and a single point of failure that would stop everything. Any of those is worth addressing before it becomes urgent.
